With the T20 World Cup slated to begin on October 17, many cricket fans would have expected West Indies to include Sunil Narine as a last-minute change in their squad. The spinner has been in excellent form for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the playoff stage of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season. He emerged as the star player for his side in the Eliminator against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Monday, taking four wickets and hitting a match-winning 26 off 15 balls. But West Indies captain Kieron Pollard has confirmed that there will be no changes in the squad before the ICC deadline on Friday. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Pollard said that Naren will not be hosting the showpiece events in the UAE and Oman.
“If I add my two cents or my words on how his non-inclusion happened, it could be – like how he is bowling on these Sharjah wickets – in all different directions. Let’s get to those fifteen guys Deal with who we have here at the moment, which is more important, and see if we can rally around these guys and see if we can defend our title”, Pollard said.
The all-rounder also mentioned that Narine is his “friend first” and also called him a “world-class cricketer”.
He said, “I have no comment on this. A lot has been said on that. I think people have given the reason for not joining him at this point of time. For me personally, I consider Sunil Narine an international cricketer. I know as a friend before. We grew up playing cricket together. He is a world class cricketer”, he said.
Since the resumption of IPL 2021 in the UAE, Narine has also recorded 11 wickets in eight matches. He has scored only 6.12 runs per over in the tournament on UAE pitches. He will next be seen in action for a place in the finals in the upcoming Qualifier 2 between KKR and Delhi Capitals (DC).
