India batting great Sunil Gavaskar believes that winning the T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, starting Sunday, could provide the perfect end to Virat Kohli’s captaincy stint in the shorter format of the game. The upcoming showpiece event will be Kohli’s last act as a leader in T20Is and the 32-year-old would like to finish it on a high.
Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore were pulled out of the Indian Premier League 2021 this week after losing the Eliminator against Kolkata Knight Riders. This was Kohli’s last act as RCB captain, and meant that he ended his tenure as the captain of Bangalore without a trophy.
Gavaskar, however, insisted that his tenure as T20 captain could end if Kohli manages to win the T20 World Cup this year.
“It will be fantastic. Because he will probably have the best ending as captain (T20). Playing for a franchise is one thing but playing for a country is an entirely different thing. So it would be great to win a tournament for a country, Gavaskar while speaking on this said star sports, the official broadcaster of IPL.
Gavaskar cited the example of Clive Lloyd who lost a big series after winning the World Cup twice as captain. The former India batsman said that it could work the other way around for the India captain.
“As I said earlier, these scripts are written there (points to the sky). We don’t know what these scripts are. Look at Clive Lloyd for example. Winning the World Cup in 1975 and 1979 and then what happened in 1983 , he lost to India in the final.
“At the Champions of Champions in 1985, he lost again. In Test cricket and one-day cricket, over the years, he didn’t win.
Gavaskar signed, “Here, it could actually happen, forget what happened to RCB et cetera, here he could end up lifting the World Cup trophy. It would be the most glorious end to his captaincy that one can imagine.” “
India will start their campaign in the T20 World Cup from 24 October, with their first match being played against Pakistan.
